Why do we need New Ways of Collaboration?
The world of work is changing - towards meaningful, productive work that is enjoyable.
COVID is a threat, but at the same time it opens up spaces and opportunities to do things differently. At the same time, Corona is only an accelerator, a trigger. Corona shows the limits of the current organization of work and the possibilities it creates if we are willing to open ourselves to new ideas.
The trend toward knowledge work. Most work requires cognitive skills. This means we may use our brains even better.
Neuroscience: in the last 10+ years we have learned a lot about how our brain works and what conditions it needs to be productive.
VUCA: we don't know what's coming next. That requires new approaches, that requires new ways of working together.
What does 'New Ways of Collaboration' mean?
The human brain does about 1,000,000,000,000 computing operations per second. What does it take to tap into these resources for ourselves?
Fearlessness - If you want your brain and other people's brains to work optimally, you need to create an environment of fearlessness.
Positive emotions: Our brains are best able to make new neural connections when we are in a positive mood. The new world of work is about learning new things, finding new approaches. It's about innovation, creativity. So we need to create that environment with positive emotions.
Relationships with other people: A relatively new field in neuroscience is called "social neuroscience." It proves that our brain needs relationships with other people. It has evolved in this way for this reason. Therefore, we need to create an environment for good relationships.
Purpose: our brains are pattern recognition detectors. Our brain wants to understand why we do things, it needs purpose.
How to implement 'New Ways of Collaboration'?
Implementation is primarily about two areas.
The first is leadership. The type of leadership changes fundamentally to an attitude that gives (almost) all decision-making authority to employees in the appropriate roles and understands its own role primarily as creating optimal conditions (fearlessness, positive emotion, relationships, purpose).
Secondly, mechanisms, tools and rules are needed to structure collaboration. In terms of content, these include, for example, decision-making, dealing with conflict, structuring the organization of work, coaching.
